Why is my check engine light on?
We hope it never happens, but if your Check Engine Light comes on, we can help!
The "check engine" light is part of your Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, or Ram vehicle's onboard diagnostics (OBD) system. When your vehicle's computer turns on a check engine light indicator - a picture of an engine in yellow - it means it has encountered an issue the onboard computer can't solve by itself.
In addition to turning on the light, the computer stores a 'Diagnostic Trouble Codes' its memory that identifies the source of the problem, such as a malfunctioning sensor.
Should I be concerned?
All check engine lights are cause for concern. It means a component in your car's engine is malfunctioning. Sometimes, it's a one time problem - a fluke - that causes the Trouble Code to appear. If that's the case, then a simple reset of your vehicles computer history will resolve the problem. If it's a faulty sensor or malfunctioning part, then it may produce multiple Trouble Codes that will require more intensive inspection by a technician.
Is this something I can fix myself?
Unfortunately, resolving a check engine light requires hooking your vehicle up to a special diagnostic computer specific to your make and model of vehicle. It requires specialized equipment only available to dealerships and authorized repair facilities.
